The fans were the winners AND MVPs when Atlanta’s All-Star Dirty South Derby Girls brought heart-stopping action and a dramatic comeback to almost take the win against the Minnesota RollerGirls. If you didn’t get enough excitement in the first game, the second bout of the doubleheader on May 17 brought fans to their feet, screaming for their girls in red.
Minnesota came to PLAY, and the first few jams brought an early lead for our friends to the North. The Dirty South was plagued by jammer penalties, and Minnesota jammers Slambda Phage and Harmony Killerbruise took advantage, widening the score even more. Minnesota plays a fiercely physical game, and faced with tough walls and even tougher jammers, the Dirty South wasn’t able to get their footing. Minnesota was dominating the Dirty South by over one hundred points. Even with a power jam by Bruze Orman with seconds left on the clock, the score at halftime was 121-38 with Minnesota in the lead.
Some teams would have resigned themselves to a big loss–an 83-point lead at halftime seems insurmountable. But did the Dirty South Derby Girls give up? Not a chance. The Dirty South rallied at halftime and set themselves on a course to mount the most ambitious comeback in the history of the team.
Minnesota wasn’t giving up, but the Dirty South blockers Ozzie Kamakazie and Scout SnipeHer kept their walls tight, and jammers Belle of the Brawl and Wild Cherri approached every jam like it was the first. Jammunition gained momentum when she set the track on fire with a 21 point jam, and little by little, jam by jam, the Dirty South was heading for domination. The crowd was hot, showing their appreciation for the home team with thunderous cheering for every point scored. With just under four minutes left in the game, the score was 152-125, with Minnesota still in the lead. The Dirty South fought until the last second, and although they weren’t able to get in the lead, no one left the game disappointed.
