In case you missed it, the Jukes of Hazzard are a force to be reckoned with this year. Their season opened February 18th, at home against Muscogee. We’ve been following a fantastic group of these new skaters from Rec League, to Fresh Meat and onto home teams. Today, we check in with Square Ruthless as she talks about her very first travel team game!
I played the Muskogee Rollergirls on Saturday February 18th at the Yaarab Shriners Temple.
Tell me about the morning before the game (what were you feeling, what did you eat, what did you do):
This is my first season and I am still trying to perfect the morning of a game. That morning I woke up a little more nervous than usual because I didn’t know anyone on that team or what to expect. And when I’m nervous it’s hard to get me to do much. I think I had oatmeal for breakfast and then a Publix sub for my pregame lunch, that I finished after the game.
What was the best piece of advice that you got before the game?
Don’t get in your head, you got this. I tend to get wrapped up in the moment and my emotions. But if I just breathe and play jam by jam I can do it.
What’s your favorite memory from the game?
The last jam was my favorite jam. I got lead, I shot through the pack not once but twice and we won!
How did you feel after the game?
I felt great! We won and I helped with that. I scored some points. I did my job, and my team did theirs. I know I had some good moments and some bad moments but overall I played a decent game.
If you could do it again, would you do anything differently?
Yes, I would have eaten more and maybe taken some form of caffeine.
What would you tell someone who wants to play competitive roller derby?
Do it! It’s so much fun and if you try hard and work at it you can also do it.
If you want to see our Jukes continue their tour of domination through the southeast, make sure to get out to the Akins Arena at the Classic Center THIS SATURDAY to see them take on the Classic City Rollergirls!
