We wrapped up our 2014 Home Season on August 30th with a very exciting and intense Championship Bout (Congrats, Denim Demons!!). For fans, that means some time to get super-excited and re-energized for ARG’s 2015 season, and for many skaters, it’s a chance to rest and prepare to come back even stronger in 2015! Still, despite some time off the track, the work of running the league doesn’t stop in the off season! League members work tirelessly to keep the business running all year long. Often that goes without thanks or visible appreciation, but we continue to do it, for the love of derby.
This time of year also signals electing a new board of directors and new committee heads to oversee the league’s business operations. I have been fortunate to spend the past two years as President of the Atlanta Rollergirls, and will be passing the torch to Axtual Malice. There have been a lot of changes, highlights, and developments for ARG during my tenure. One of the most unique experiences was the opportunity to be President during our 10th year anniversary season! I want to extend so many special thanks to the skaters and volunteers who worked so hard to build this league from the ground up and to keep the league advancing to where we are today.
However, I think the most exciting thing that happened during my time as President is something I am very thrilled to share with everyone right now! EXCITING NEWS! I am pleased to announce that as of August 13, 2014, Atlanta Roller Derby, Inc. d.b.a. Atlanta Rollergirls, received notice from the IRS that our application as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization was approved! This has been a very long & tedious process that began pretty much immediately after I became President two years ago. It was something the league had contemplated for a long time, but we never took the plunge. We were essentially operating as a non-profit anyway: none of our skaters are paid, and any profit we earn goes back solely to fund our roller derby adventures. So, we decided to finally make it official, and there were several steps along the way. First, we switched business operations from our original Dirty South Derby, LLC to the GA non-profit Atlanta Roller Derby, Inc. with the help of some wonderful legal experts, Eadaoin Waller & Rhett Laurens. We then completed the very lengthy application to the IRS and submitted it on July 15, 2013. I should also extend special thanks to our Business Committee Head, Quadratic Abrasion and Treasurer, Totalitiffian, for working extra hard to get all of the numbers and dollars pieces together during the application process. It was truly a trying process at times, and the wait to get the final approval made it even more challenging. But, thankfully, we finally have the reward!
I am most excited about what being a 501(c)(3) organization means for the future of our league, and I am truly honored to have helped lead the effort to make this a reality for ARG. This approval opens doors for ARG to apply for and receive grants and tax-deductible donations from donors and sponsors. These generous gifts will help provide long-term sustainability for the league. The opportunities afforded to us as a 501(c)(3) will also support one of ARG’s primary purposes of fostering amateur roller derby competition through development and maintenance of an Atlanta area women’s roller derby league that will compete locally, nationally and internationally. Really, the sky is the limit!
I would like to thank ARG for trusting me to lead the league, with the assistance of the other committee heads and our skater committee members over the past 2 years! I am excited to welcome new leadership into their positions and see what great things are in store for 2015!
