In spite of the fact that we hit people for fun, the Atlanta Rollergirls are a caring and generous bunch. At this time of year, we like to take our generosity one step further. We spoke with a few of our rollergirls to see how they’re helping out the community as the holidays approach.
Power couple Lez Dispenser and The Boss have partnered with the Decatur-Dekalb YMCA‘s Giving Tree program, which provides gifts and other items to needy families during the holidays. In addition to giving gifts themselves, Lez and Boss have coordinated a group of rollergirls who are all giving as well. We asked Boss what motivated them to take on this project.
“We organized this year because we wanted to give back to the community. We know that ARG is full of really generous, giving people, so we figured why not contribute to The Giving Tree as a group and make a bigger impact? The response from the league was wonderful and many rollergirls are participating. We are sponsoring children and purchasing items from a tag they fill out. The YMCA Giving Tree benefits local Atlanta families. They are low-income families that are asked by the YMCA Community Learning Center group to be included in the Giving Tree. Families are encouraged to prioritize gift choices, with a maximum value per child or adult to avoid unreal expectations and disappointments. Most of the rollergirls involved purchased more than what is on the child’s tag, as many of the children asked for basic necessities like shoes or clothes, so the rollergirls purchased toys as well so they can have a little extra during the holidays. As Ida Backoff said, ‘No child should go without toys on Christmas.'”
Belle of the Brawl and LORD Blackie are providing warmth and love to some less fortunate animals who might not otherwise have survived to see Christmas. They have opened their homes to take care of the ailing Gus the dog and Martin the cat, respectively. One look at these two guys and you can see why!

Violent Beauregarde and her husband, Trey, are providing a unique and generous gift to some needy families in developing countries through Heifer International. This group provides help in many different ways, but most notably through gifts of livestock. Donors can choose from a gift catalog which contains heifers, goats, and water buffalos among other animals. Vi says this is her very favorite charity…
“Last year we donated an animal per family member and picked a different animal for each person. This year they have a lot more things you can choose like clean water, sustainable farming, women’s empowerment, etc. It’s so exciting!!”
Nutella Ferrero will be providing a living history to the visitors of the Governor’s Mansion as she volunteers this year. And she gets to dress up in some pretty awesome colonial gear to do it! We asked her to tell us a little more about the program.
“The Governor’s Mansion started hosting tours last year with an ‘Early Georgia Christmas’ theme. As such, they seek out State of Georgia employees to be reenactors and hosts. The volunteers sing carols, teach colonial dances, and lead colonial and Native American games that are all historically accurate. School groups and senior citizen groups pull in by the bus load to experience the tours. Tours are free to the public and available daily December 7-19 from 9:30-11am.”
